Summary of 2024 Suicide-Related Emergency Department Visits and Deaths

  • So far in 2024, the overall rate of suicide-related ED visits is significantly lower than the previous three-year average. This decrease is seen in both men and women and those aged 0-24. The ages of 25-44 have seen a significant increase in suicide-related ED visits.
  • So far in 2024, residents of Rutland and Windham Counties are experiencing statistically higher rates of suicide-related ED visits compared to the rest of Vermont, and residents of Grand Isle, Essex, and Addison Counties are experiencing a significantly lower rate of suicide-related ED visits.
  • While trending lower, the rate of suicide death in Vermont for January - July 2024 was similar to the previous three-year average.
