The mission of the Vermont Department of Health Tuberculosis Program is to control, prevent, and eventually eliminate tuberculosis (TB) in Vermont. The Program works to detect all cases of active TB disease in Vermont and collaborates with community providers to ensure each case is effectively treated. The Program also works to minimize the spread of TB through contact tracing efforts and through the promotion of targeted testing and treatment of TB infection.

Compared to most countries, TB incidence in the United States is low and Vermont has one of the lowest rates in the nation. However, TB is still a significant public health concern. In the United States, TB incidence rates increased in 2023. Worldwide, TB was declared the world’s leading infectious disease killer in 2024.
