Teen Substance Use: A Developmentally-Matched Approach for Treatment, Services, and Support
Vermont’s substance use treatment and recovery services and programs are primarily crafted to serve adults impacted by substance misuse and chemical dependency. Most clients and patients accessing these services, however, identify their teen years (adolescence and emerging adulthood) as a time when their problematic substance use first began.
This stage of development has some novel considerations for substance use disorder and co-occurring/integrated treatment: developmental-matching, with attention, collaboration, and support for parents, families, and other caregivers, as well as active engagement with the systems and social drivers that both nurture and compromise a young person’s health and well-being.
