A Restorative Alternative for School Substance Use Infractions: Insights from the iDECIDE Program
Brief Description: This webinar will review the evidence revealing why punitive responses to school-based substance use infractions are an inadequate means to address student substance use, often exacerbating harm and perpetuating existing social inequities. The ineffectiveness of punitive responses underscores the urgent need for schools and communities to invest in accessible, scalable alternatives to punishment. iDECIDE is one alternative to punishment that offers promising findings to reduce student absenteeism, substance-related infractions, and all infractions in schools that have implemented the program.
This webinar will describe the development of the iDECIDE program’s restorative approach to student substance use infractions and will include an overview of the curriculum, implementation best practices, implementation challenges in Massachusetts, particularly as it relates to school policies, and opportunities for adopting iDECIDE in other states.
