The Interprofessional Treatment of Pain in the Setting of Substance Use Disorders or Complex Persistent Opioid Dependence
Individuals with chronic pain utilizing opioids for pain management may develop complex persistent opioid dependence. Also a number of individuals with opioid use disorder have co-morbid chronic pain conditions that may respond to opioid analgesia. This didactic presentation will include a review of the incidence of chronic pain with development of complex persistent opioid dependence, opioid-induced hyperalgesia as well as the incidence of chronic pain in those with opioid use disorder.
The analgesic management of acute and chronic pain for those individuals on medications for opioid use disorder as well as those with complex persistent opioid dependence will be described utilizing a case-based approach. The presenter will provide recommendations for further education on the management of pain and opioid use disorder to improve clinician competence and will recommend resources for Interprofessional team members to utilize to counsel patients on self-management of pain through nonpharmacologic strategies.
