What Supervisors Need to Know about Peer Support Supervision: The Five Critical Functions of Supervision
This 90-minute webinar explores the complex nature of supervision and introduces the Five Critical Functions of Supervision (Edwards, 2018). This framework expands on the traditional three-function model (e.g., administrative, educative, and support) by adding the components of advocacy and evaluation.
This model guides supervisors to reflect critically on the depth and scope of their responsibilities; fosters accountability; promotes collaboration; and illustrates that supervision can be conducted compassionately without infantilizing or setting a double standard for peer support workers. Rationale for inclusion of this content responds to the frequently misunderstood and underestimated scope of supervisory practice and the myriad roles embodied by effective supervisors.
The spectrum of focus in supervision includes recruitment and onboarding, balancing the fine line between providing support and conducting therapy, advocating for staff within the organization, and structuring ongoing and constructive feedback that positions staff to succeed in their professional aspirations rather than merely survive in the workplace.
