Learning Objectives
- Understand the principles of prevention practice grounded in prevention science, and common characteristics of effective prevention programs;
- Explain the role, importance, and limitations of evidence in selecting, refining, or de-implementing prevention strategies;
- Identify and successfully navigate evidence-based program registries to inform program selection decisions;
- Understand the important factors beyond evidence that impact the effectiveness of programs and strategies;
- Utilize the steps in a thoughtful and comprehensive decision-making process for comparing and choosing prevention programs and strategies.
Dr. Brian K. Bumbarger is the Associate Director for Implementation Science and Strategy at ADAPT, supporting substance use prevention through the HIDTA program under the Office of National Drug Control Policy. With nearly 30 years in prevention science, he is a recognized leader in community capacity building and scaling effective practices. He founded the EPISCenter, aiding over 300 program replications and 3,000+ prevention practitioners. A founding member of SIRC and the Global Implementation Society, he also holds adjunct research roles at Colorado State and Penn State Universities. He has served on the SPR Board and received its 2014 Translational Science and 2020 Service to Society Awards.
