Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorders and ADHD
Why do substance use disorders (SUD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently co-occur? Join Dr. Timothy E. Wilens, chief of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and co-director of the Center for Addiction Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, to learn why these two conditions frequently co-occur and how stimulant treatment of ADHD can mitigate risk of later development of SUD. Next, diagnostic considerations in identifying ADHD in patients with SUD will be highlighted including recent data on the misuse of stimulant medications in patients with higher risk of significant morbidity. Both psychotherapeutic and pharmacotherapeutic treatment strategies for individuals with co-occurring SUD and ADHD will be presented, along with patient scenarios and recent changes in regulatory considerations related to caring for this patient population.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
