What to Know About the Cyclosporiasis Outbreak
July 14, 2026 – Public health officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by a parasite.
No cases connected to the current outbreak have been reported in Vermont. Cyclosporiasis cases are rare in Vermont, and the small number reported each year are most often linked with international travel.
Cyclosporiasis does not spread directly from person to person. It spreads by eating food or drinking water contaminated with the parasite. Symptoms can include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, fatigue, and weight loss.
While investigators work to identify the source of this outbreak, it's always important to safely handle food. To protect yourself and loved ones from foodborne illnesses like cyclospora, you can:
- Wash fresh produce under running water
- Wash your hands with soap and water before preparing food
- Avoid cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat foods
- Cook foods to safe temperatures
- Refrigerate perishable foods promptly
