Patients with Substance Use Disorders affected by Sexual Violence & Coercion
This workshop will explore incidence of sex trafficking, sexual violence and substance use coercion in Vermont patients with SUDs. This will include outlining elements of power and control, red flags and interference with treatment. Participants will leave with a deeper knowledge of:
Incidence of sex trafficking, sexual violence and substance use coercion in Vermont patients with Substance Use Disorders
Dynamics of sexual/intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance use coercion. This includes exploration of elements of power and control
Indications of coercive partner interference with patient treatment engagement
Practice considerations:
- Universal screening
- Providing safe, clear boundaries
- Impact of treatment setting & layout on identification of partner treatment interference
- Potential for staff to experience secondary trauma
Care coordination with community domestic and sexual violence response organizations:
- Pathways to referrals to VT Network member organizations
- What VT Network organizations can provide
- How clinics and VT Network organizations can work collaboratively
