Bennington Local Health Office

We are the face of public health in Bennington County. We work with schools, employers, town offices and other groups to serve individuals and families right here in our community. We help pregnant people, new parents and children to eat well and learn about nutrition. We provide breastfeeding support, immunizations and identify opportunities to minimize the spread of disease. We conduct drills to prepare for potential public health emergencies and support programs and policies that help all people form healthy lifelong habits. Community Room Reservation

To reserve the Community Room, please contact our office at 802-447-3531.

  • Anyone who would like to use the community room, must be a part of a non-profit organization.
  • Maximum Capacity 125
  • A member of the Vermont Department of Health or Community College of Vermont (CCV) staff must be present during your meeting, if scheduled outside of business hours.
  • Doors will be locked outside of our normal business hours.

Chronic Disease Prevention

We work with community organizations, municipal and regional planners, schools and health care providers. We begin with conversations to learn what is important to our community. From there, we find ways to weave in health and wellness improvements that fit the priorities of our towns.

Local Highlights

  • The Ninja Trail from Hicks Avenue to the Bennington College entrance, a 2.12-mile-long path beginning at the pedestrian bridge on Hicks Avenue and running along the Walloomsac River behind Walmart and Hannaford to the entrance to Bennington College.
  • Benmont Avenue Bike/Ped Improvements striping bike lanes thereby improving bicycle and pedestrian safety on this heavily traveled corridor.
  • Applegate Walking path which will connect a 104-unit affordable housing complex, Applegate Apartments, to Bennington’s municipal sidewalk network.
  • Kocher Drive Route 7 Improvement, from Aldi to East Road, is a project that involves a shared-use bike path with signalized intersection improvements at Route 7/Kocher Drive.

Emergency Preparedness

The Bennington Local Health Office works with local partners to prepare, respond and recover from public health emergencies. We provide support and participate in hospital preparedness with the Southern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), help exercise hospital plans and serve on the larger Vermont Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Committee. We work with local, state and federal partners to make sure we are prepared to distribute medicine, supplies and information to residents of Lamoille Valley in a health emergency.

Medicine Distribution Sites Wanted

During certain public health emergencies, the Bennington Local Health Office will set up a site for distributing medications. The site, called a “point of distribution” or POD site, helps the Health Department get medicine to people who need it as quickly as possible.

Medical Reserve Corps

Southwestern Vermont Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a community-based program of volunteers who donate their time and expertise to promote healthy living throughout the year and to prepare for and respond to emergencies. Volunteers set up and staff first aid stations at events, provide first aid and help community members prepare for emergencies. 

MRC volunteers strengthen our community’s health and resiliency in the face of an emergency. You do not need to be in the medical field to volunteer.

Immunization

The Bennington Local Health office offers immunizations at no charge to people under 65 who are uninsured, experiencing significant barriers to access, or patients of a medical practice that cannot receive vaccines through the Vermont Vaccines for Children & Adults program.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) at Bennington Local Health Office

The WIC Program (Women, Infants, and Children) provides access to healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and other community resources. You can trust WIC to be your family's nutrition expert during critical periods of growth and development, like pregnancy, infancy and early childhood.

WIC is for income-eligible Vermont residents who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a new baby, and children under age 5. Parents, grandparents and foster parents may apply for children in their care. If you or your child is on Medicaid, Dr. Dynasaur or 3SquaresVT/SNAP, you can join WIC.

Water Testing Drop Off

Bennington Local Health Office is a part of the Drinking Water Drop-Off Program. 

  • Our office does not provide water testing kits. For information on ordering water test kits, see How to Test Your Drinking Water.
  • Plan to drop off or ship your water samples the same day you collect them. Some samples may need to remain cold for testing. 
  • Drop-off times are Monday - Thursday, 7:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Samples are not accepted on Fridays, state holidays, or the day before state holidays.
