Prevention Across the Lifespan: Substance Use Risk and Protective Factors for the Older Adult Population
Substance use prevention isn’t just for young people—it’s a lifelong concern. Older adults face unique challenges that increase vulnerability to substance misuse, including grief, retirement, changes in mobility, and loss of independence. These life transitions are powerful risk factors that require tailored prevention strategies.
In this 90-minute webinar, Charlotte Carlton—herself a Baby Boomer and a longtime prevention expert—will explore the specific risks and protective factors related to substance use among older adults. Participants will learn how to better support aging populations through prevention-informed approaches, backed by both lived experience and research evidence.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define the age range and characteristics of the older adult population
- Identify the most common substances used by older adults
- Understand key risk and protective factors specific to this age group
- Recognize strategies to mitigate risk and promote resilience in older adult populations
