This interactive learning session equips behavioral health providers to identify the roots of bias, its effects on individuals, families and communities and apply respectful, person-first language to foster supportive recovery environments. The discussion will offer actionable tools, real-world examples, and bias reducing strategies to dismantle structural, public, and self-stigma and promote trauma-informed and recovery-oriented care and supports.
Goal: Equip workforce professionals with best practices communication frameworks and behavioral interventions to eliminate stigma in healthcare, substance use treatment and community settings.

Participants will be able to...
- Identify the three tiers of stigma and their potential impacts
- Identify how stigma diminishes engagement, drives treatment avoidance, increases drop-out rates, and exacerbates substance use and/or mental health co-morbidities.
- Review the neurobiology of substance use disorders
- List benefits of person-first language communication and other bias reducing strategies
