Mental Illness as a Multi-layered Risk Factor for Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
The intersection of mental illness and substance use disorder is complicated! In this event, we will reflect on the ways mental illness can predetermine how a person is likely to engage with substances, how it can affect their ability to discontinue their use, as well as influence the severity of their substance use disorder.
From neurobiological considerations to substances serving as a coping mechanism, we will unpack the intersection of these challenges to empower our efforts and intervention and support. In addition, we will reflect on our treatment efforts in the context of promoting mental health and wellbeing for those living with substance use disorders.
