BURLINGTON – The State of Vermont plan for monitoring mosquito activity this summer, and responding to mosquito-borne health threats will be presented at a public meeting on Wednesday, July 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brandon Town Hall.
Experts from the Health Department and the Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets will discuss the 2013 Arboviral Surveillance & Response Plan, including plans for trapping and testing mosquitoes, expanded surveillance for human and animal illness through health care providers and veterinarians, public information and education on preventing mosquito-borne illness, and actions that may be taken based on levels of risk.
Last year, two people from southern Addison and northern Rutland counties died from Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). This was the first time that a human case of EEE had ever been reported in the state. Two horses from the area were also confirmed to have the disease, and the virus was isolated from 10 mosquito pools.
The plan and extensive information about mosquito-borne illness is available at the Health Department’s website.
