How To Obtain a Copy of a Vital Record

Vital records available from the Health Department include records of Vermont births and deaths, marriages and divorces, and the establishment and dissolution of both civil unions and reciprocal beneficiaries relationships.

Is it a New or Old Record?

There are two state agencies that maintain vital records. The one you contact for a certified copy depends on how long ago the event took place.

New Records: Five years or fewer

For records of vital events that occurred within the past five years contact:

Older Records: More than five years

For records of vital events older than the past five years contact:

Both VSARA and the Department of Health charge a fee per certified copy.

Vermont State Archives and Records Administration

The Vermont State Archives and Records Administration (VSARA) maintains records for vital events which occured more than five years ago.

One can receive either informational copies or certified copies of vital records from VSARA’s Reference and Research section in Middlesex. Certified copies of vital records cost $10 per certification.  Informational copies are charged according to the “ Official Fee Schedule for Copying Public Records.”
