BURLINGTON – U.S. Department of Justice officials concluded a three-day on-site inspection of the Vermont State Hospital as part of its investigation of possible past violations of patient’s civil rights. A report of findings and recommendations is expected from the Department of Justice within the next several months.

“While awaiting the Department of Justice findings, we will continue to aggressively pursue improvements to the quality of care for patients,” said Dr. Susan Wehry, health department deputy commissioner of mental health.

This investigation is not related to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) investigation of the state hospital earlier this year. The health department received word from CMS this week that a plan of correction created after the investigation, and a time schedule for completion of the plan, has been approved.
