Mental Health Services

Vermont State Hospital Services

It is expected that every person who comes to Vermont State Hospital will leave as soon as the hospital is no longer needed. Some situations are more complicated than others and so some people stay longer than others.

The VSH task is to help patients achieve a stability and return to their home communities as soon as possible. Patients (also called clients) are involved in their own treatment plan and care as much as possible. Families and friends are also encouraged to be involved.

There are many people in the world who suffer from mental illness, but they do not all need to be in the hospital. Most of the treatment effort will be spent on determining what you need in order to leave the hospital, even if every problem has not been totally solved.

VSH staff believe that participation in programs and the ability to follow ordinary social rules of living on the wards, are indicators of your capacity for independent self-care.
