Prevention efforts focus on promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy communities for all youth and families. Prevention efforts also focus on reducing risk factors, minimizing possible trauma, and increasing a person's ability to recover quickly.
Other prevention (e.g., treatment) efforts focus on reducing any trauma and poor functioning created by a difficult event or situation. The prevention efforts may focus on one or more of the following:
- Work with families, community groups, schools, and other health and child care providers to improve situations/environments for children and families through education, consultation, and training
- Education activities about mental health for the public at large
- Screening and referral
