Lead is a highly toxic metal. It can be found in both public and private water systems, in household plumbing, and in well components.

Manganese is an essential nutrient for the human body and is found in some foods. It is also a naturally occuring metal found in some rocks and soils in Vermont and may get into groundwater.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that public water systems use chlorine for disinfection at the water treatment facility.

The mosquito that transmits Zika is not known to be present in Vermont. But travelers to Zika-affected countries can be infected, and the virus can be spread during sex with a Zika-infected sex partner. 

Nitrogen can take different forms in nature and is important for life in both plants and animals. The most common form of nitrogen found in well water is nitrate.
